Cher on Love Beyond Time:
How the Icon Redefines Age and Connection with Alexander “A.E.” Edwards
Los Angeles | Cher, 79, tells CBS
Mornings that her 40-year age gap with producer Alexander Edwards “isn’t a
problem” — and shares how she bonded with his 6-year-old son.
A Romance Measured in Joy, Not Years
Speaking
with Gayle King on CBS Mornings (Nov. 4), Cher dismissed the idea that her
four-decade difference with music executive Alexander “A.E.” Edwards defines
their relationship. “No, thank God,” she said with a laugh. “He just says, ‘You
get older, but your spirit is younger.’” Since meeting in 2022, the pair have
become a fixture on red carpets and at recording studios. To Cher, what matters
is chemistry and humor. “We laugh all the time, and I just love him. He’s
beautiful and really talented — one of the most talented people I’ve ever met.”
Family Ties and a Promise Fulfilled
Beyond
romance, the singer revealed an unexpected wish that came true through Edwards’
6-year-old son, Slash, whom he shares with model Amber Rose. “I used to say,
‘God, give me a toddler and a man,’” Cher joked. “Slash is funny, smart — just
a delight.” Cher is already mother to Chaz Bono, 56, and Elijah Blue Allman,
49, and said she finds renewed energy spending time with a young child again.
Quiet Strength Against Public Noise
Asked about
public curiosity over their relationship, Cher responded firmly: “They’re not
living my life. Nobody knows what goes on between us. We just have a blast.”
Her remarks arrive months after speculation about a breakup — rumors later
dismissed by her representative — and just over a year after Edwards organized
what Cher called a “fabulous” 78th-birthday celebration in Los Angeles.
Music as a Common Language
The
couple’s collaboration now extends into the studio. Cher confirmed they plan to
record a new album together, with Edwards set to produce. “It’s something
fresh,” she said earlier this year. “We haven’t started yet, but it’s coming.”
The project will mark Cher’s first major musical partnership since her 2023
Christmas record, adding another layer to a relationship built on creativity as
much as affection.
Breaking the Age-Gap Stereotype
Cher’s
openness echoes a broader cultural shift among high-profile couples who have
confronted criticism over significant age differences — from Sarah Paulson
& Holland Taylor to Michael Douglas & Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Sociologists note that when the woman is older, public scrutiny tends to
intensify — a bias Cher has long challenged simply by living on her own terms.
“Love doesn’t come with a timestamp,” said Dr. Erika Mendez, a social
psychologist at UCLA interviewed by CRN Times. “What Cher demonstrates is agency
— choosing happiness without apology.”
A Love Story Still Being Written
For a
performer whose six-decade career has spanned reinvention after reinvention,
Cher’s current chapter feels both intimate and liberating. “We don’t plan too
far ahead,” she told CBS Mornings. “We just enjoy each day.” And if the
conversation turns to modeling again — perhaps even a Victoria’s Secret
campaign — Cher simply smiles. The message is clear: confidence, not
chronology, is her real trademark.
