Huntingdon
(UK), 4 Nov 2025 — The 48-year-old LNER employee remains in critical condition
after protecting passengers during a mass stabbing on a London-bound train.
A veteran LNER rail worker is fighting for his life after confronting a knife-wielding attacker on a packed intercity train. Samir Zitouni, 48, suffered serious injuries while shielding passengers aboard Saturday’s 6:25 p.m. Doncaster–London King’s Cross service, according to British Transport Police (BTP).
Extraordinary
Bravery Praised
Deputy
Chief Constable Stuart Cundy said CCTV footage showed Mr Zitouni’s “actions were
nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved people’s lives.”
LNER
confirmed he has worked more than 20 years as a Customer Experience Host and
called him a “valued member of the team.”
Company
and Family Statements
LNER
managing director David Horne commended his employee’s courage:
“In a moment of crisis, Sam did not hesitate as he stepped forward to protect those around him. His actions were incredibly brave, and we are so proud of him and of all our colleagues who acted with such courage that evening.”
Zitouni’s
family thanked the public for “overwhelming support,” calling him a lifelong
hero:
“The police called him a hero on Saturday evening, but to us — he’s always been a hero.”
Investigation
and Charges
BTP
identified Anthony Williams, 32, of no fixed abode, as the suspect now charged
with 11 counts of attempted murder and possession of a bladed article.
He
is also accused of a separate knife attack earlier at London’s Pontoon Dock
station. Williams appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was
remanded in custody.
Government
Response
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said authorities are investigating whether the suspect was involved in further offences across the weekend, promising a “comprehensive security review on intercity routes.”
Rail
Security and Public Heroes
Experts
note that frontline railway staff often face unpredictable threats. According
to the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB), assaults on transport workers
rose 18 % in 2024.
Samir
Zitouni’s actions echo previous incidents where rapid intervention prevented
mass casualties — a reminder of the vital human role behind public transport
safety.
As
investigations continue, communities across the UK are uniting in support of a
man whose instinct was to protect others first. Samir Zitouni’s bravery
highlights not only personal courage but also the everyday dedication of
workers ensuring public safety.
