celebration; several injured, one suspect arrested.
LIVERPOOL, UK – A moment of celebration turned into
chaos as a car drove into a crowd of Liverpool FC fans during the team’s
Premier League victory parade on Water Street around 6:00 PM BST, Sunday.
Merseyside Police confirmed several pedestrians
were struck, and a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area has
been arrested. The motive remains under investigation.
Eyewitness Matt Cole, a BBC reporter, described the
scene as "horrendous," stating the vehicle missed him and his family
“by literally inches.” Cole recounted the car speeding through the crowd
moments after fireworks had ended. He said an ambulance, which had just passed
through, may have slowed the vehicle’s path.
"The car had no intention— it appeared—of
stopping," said Cole, noting that bystanders attempted to stop the car,
which had a smashed rear windshield.
Harry Rashid, 48, who was with his wife and
daughters, told PA Media the car "just rammed into all the people at the
side of us" at high speed, describing the impact as “pop, pop, pop” as
people were thrown off the bonnet. He called it "horrendous."
Another witness, Mike Maddra, said the car mounted
the pavement and appeared to target pedestrians before hitting at least two
people. Armed police quickly arrived, and emergency services tended to the
injured.
Authorities have not yet ruled out whether the act
was intentional. Investigations are ongoing, and the public is urged to avoid
the area as emergency response continues.
