Video shows UK inmates smiling before beating a sex offender to death in his cell. Two were convicted.
Chilling footage released Thursday reveals two inmates at His Majesty’s
Prison Fosse Way grinning before brutally killing a fellow prisoner convicted
of sex offenses.
Leicestershire, UK | The
surveillance video shows Ashirie Smith, 19, and Thierry Robinson, 21, walking
shirtless down a corridor at the UK prison last August. The two can be seen
flashing disturbing smiles moments before entering Mahir Abdulrahman's cell.
Just 37 seconds later, they emerged, leaving Abdulrahman unconscious and
fatally beaten.
Abdulrahman, who was serving a 35-week sentence for sex-related
offenses, died within an hour from severe brain bleeding. According to trial testimony,
he had pleaded to be relocated shortly before the attack, citing persistent
harassment. Another inmate testified that the accused had been “terrorizing him
for days.”
Smith, already serving time for a weapons charge, was convicted of
murder and sentenced Thursday to life imprisonment with a minimum of 17 and a
half years before parole eligibility. Robinson was found guilty of manslaughter
and handed an 11-year sentence.
A third defendant, Shaan Karim, 38, was acquitted of both murder and
manslaughter charges.
The case has sparked renewed scrutiny of inmate safety protocols in UK
correctional facilities, particularly when high-risk individuals like sex
offenders are housed alongside violent offenders.
“This was a heinous act,” said prison director Wyn Jones. “Any death in
prison is a tragedy, but the murder of Mr. Abdulrahman was especially horrific.
My thoughts remain with his family and those affected by his untimely death.”
Authorities have not disclosed how the inmates gained access to
Abdulrahman’s cell without immediate intervention, though prison officials
confirm an internal review is ongoing.
