ETTRICK, UNITED STATES.— Five people were wounded in a shooting at Virginia State University early Saturday, including at least one student, as police investigated multiple suspects and worked to establish what led to the gunfire.

One victim remained in critical condition, according to reporting based on police information. The university temporarily locked down its campus before authorities determined there was no continuing immediate threat.

Police investigation remains active

The shooting occurred near university residence halls in the early hours of Saturday.

Authorities were investigating more than one potential suspect, but publicly available information reviewed by CRN Times did not establish a motive or identify a person who could responsibly be described as the shooter.

Federal and local agencies were assisting the investigation.

No allegation against any individual should be treated as proof of criminal responsibility unless established through the judicial process.

University lifts lockdown

The lockdown was later lifted after officials said there was no immediate continuing danger to the campus community.

Classes were expected to resume Monday, according to the Associated Press.
