HIGH FENS, BELGIUM — Belgian firefighters are working to fully contain a wildfire that has burned about 3,000 hectares in the High Fens nature reserve, the largest recorded blaze in the country and a new example of how extreme heat and dry landscapes are stretching European fire services.

Rain and hundreds of firefighters slowed the fire’s advance after it threatened communities near the German border. The blaze had expanded rapidly from a much smaller area after starting Friday, prompting evacuations and an international response involving Belgian forces and assistance from neighboring countries and European partners.

No confirmed cause had been announced as of Tuesday. Climate conditions can make a landscape more flammable, but they do not by themselves establish what ignited a particular fire.

The scale is unprecedented in Belgium’s modern wildfire record. Reuters, citing European Forest Fire Information System data, reported that the previous national benchmark was a 2011 fire that burned roughly 1,400 hectares. The High Fens blaze has more than doubled that area.

Europe’s fire season is already severe

Belgium is not facing the risk in isolation. EFFIS data show a heavy 2026 fire season across Europe, with large burned areas in multiple countries after repeated periods of heat and drought.

The World Meteorological Organization said on August 12 that record land and sea temperatures, heat, drought, wildfires and floods had characterized July and early August. Western Europe had already recorded its hottest June, according to WMO reporting based on Copernicus climate data.

Those conditions matter because vegetation loses moisture during prolonged heat and rainfall deficits. Once a fire starts, dry grasses, peat, shrubs and forest fuels can support faster spread and more difficult suppression. Wind and terrain then determine how dangerous an individual blaze becomes.

The High Fens are especially challenging because the reserve includes peatland and uneven terrain. Peat can hold fire below the surface and make apparent containment deceptive, while limited road access slows crews.

Record fire does not mean a single-cause event

Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme heat in Europe and contributing to conditions associated with higher wildfire danger. That is a broad, evidence-based climate trend. It should not be confused with a claim that climate change directly “caused” the ignition of this specific Belgian fire.

Investigators still need to determine how the blaze started. Human activity, infrastructure failures, lightning and other sources can ignite fires under the same hot and dry conditions.

The immediate priorities are to complete containment, protect evacuated communities and assess ecological damage. The longer-term question for Belgium is whether fire planning, equipment and land management designed for historically smaller incidents are adequate for a climate in which extreme fire weather is becoming more common.

The final burned-area estimate may change after satellite and field mapping. Even so, the current estimate has already placed the High Fens fire well beyond Belgium’s previous recorded benchmark and made it a significant case study in Europe’s changing wildfire risk.
