Two people were killed at a private school in Gosen-Neu Zittau, Brandenburg, and a male suspect was detained, authorities said.
GOSEN-NEU ZITTAU, GERMANY — Two people were killed and a male suspect was detained Thursday after a violent attack at a private school campus southeast of Berlin, prompting a major emergency response and leaving investigators working to establish the circumstances and motive.
The violence occurred at the Docemus school campus in Gosen-Neu Zittau, in Brandenburg's Oder-Spree district near the Berlin state boundary.
Police said a man had been detained in connection with the incident. German public broadcaster reporting and the German Press Agency also reported that a woman and a man were killed.
The first emergency response began at about 1:45 p.m. local time after calls concerning violence at the school, according to German media citing police. Officers, medical personnel and firefighters were deployed to the site, while the campus was secured as investigators began examining the scene.
Early reporting used the term Amokalarm, or an emergency alarm for a potentially serious violent attack. Police later cautioned against characterizing the incident itself as an indiscriminate “amok” attack before investigators had established what happened.
That distinction is significant because some of the most detailed accounts emerging in the first hours suggested the victims and suspected attacker may have known one another.
Victims' identities and alleged relationship remain unconfirmed
Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung, citing information obtained by the newspaper, reported that one victim was an 18-year-old female student and that the detained suspect was a 19-year-old believed to be her former boyfriend.
The newspaper reported that the second person killed was a 30-year-old man who had tried to intervene in the attack.
Reuters subsequently carried those details while clearly attributing them to the German newspaper rather than presenting them as independently confirmed by authorities.
Those ages, the reported former relationship and the circumstances in which the 30-year-old died had not been publicly confirmed by police in the initial official accounts reviewed by CRN Times.
Police had confirmed a violent incident and the detention of a male suspect but initially released few details about the victims, the alleged attacker or a possible motive.
That leaves a potentially important difference between what is established and what remains preliminary: two deaths and a detention are corroborated across multiple sources, while the personal relationship reported between the suspect and the young woman remains an attributed claim pending official confirmation.
Reports of additional injuries
Early accounts also differed over the number of people injured.
Reuters noted that Berliner Zeitung had reported two additional injuries. Other German reports referred more generally to injured people, while initial police statements did not establish a definitive casualty count beyond the developing reports of fatalities.
CRN Times therefore cannot independently confirm a final number of nonfatal casualties from the information available at this stage.
The investigation remains active, and casualty information could change as authorities release a fuller account.
Attack occurred on multi-school campus
The incident took place at Campus Neu Zittau, operated by the private Docemus school organization.
The site accommodates several forms of secondary education rather than a single conventional school. Published descriptions of the campus identify a Gymnasium, an Oberschule and a Fachoberschule at the location.
The campus lies in Gosen-Neu Zittau, a community in eastern Brandenburg close to Berlin.
The school's location helps explain the scale and cross-regional visibility of the emergency response: although the attack occurred outside Berlin, the community sits near the capital's southeastern edge.
School suspends normal operations
Docemus said it was deeply distressed by the violence and began providing psychological assistance Thursday afternoon, according to regional reporting on the school's response.
Regular classes will not take place Friday. The campus is instead expected to remain available for conversations and support as students, staff and families deal with the aftermath.
The decision marks the first confirmed institutional consequence beyond the police investigation itself.
What investigators still have to establish
Authorities have not yet provided a complete public reconstruction of the attack.
Among the central questions are what happened immediately before the violence, the precise sequence of events inside or around the campus, the relationship between the detained man and the victims, and the motive.
It also remains unclear from the initial official information whether the detained suspect was himself a student at the school.
Until investigators establish those points, reports describing the incident as specifically motivated by a former relationship should be treated as preliminary rather than as a settled police conclusion.
The scene remained under police control as the investigation continued Thursday
